Calpurnia in serving the tea to the ladies. Alexandra invites Scout to join and stay with the ladies. So Scout obtains a chance to listen to their discussions, which first was about the poor Mrunas, an African tribe being converted to Christianity. They also chat about how their black servants in their house have changed their behavior negatively ever since Tom Robinson's trial.
Miss Maudie becomes a little furious and quiets them with her icy remarks and her cold voice. Suddenly Atticus appears and instructs Alexandra to come to the kitchen. In the kitchen, Atticus announces to Alexandra, Miss Maudie and Scout that Tom was dead. He have been trying to escape prison and for that, was shot seventeen times. He asks Calpurnia to go to Tom's family with him to tell his death.
Alexandra asks Miss Maudie how the town can allow Atticus to wreck himself in pursuit of justice. Miss Maudie, in reply says that the town trusts him to do what's right. The ladies return back to the missionary circle, and manages to act as if nothing happened.
